Establishment description: 6 Unusual Facts about SAMARA Firstly I want to talk about something very special and unique, did you know that the greatest migration on earth, used to happen in South Africa, yes it was known as the Great Springbok migration, and this occurred on the plains of the Camdeboo, this was written about by Dr David Livingston and a few other explorers, and yes this happened on Samara’s land, Now moving forward in time, farmers settled in these area and put up fences and completely destroyed this migration also by killing the springbok and exporting their skins, and also chasing all the predators like Leopard, Lion and Cheetah away. The owners of Samara realised this special part of History and thus bought all the farms in that area and dropped the fences, then with consultation of scientists left the land to heal naturally for 8 years before they embarked on a dedicated land restoration program and a plan to re-introduce all the game and plants that once was free to roam and grow in this area, this is what samara is currently about and what guests can get to see and experience, it is an amazing experience and to know that when you visit 100% of your funds go towards these conservation and restoration programs is one of a kind in RSA. The Owner’s greater vision is to open up their reserve of 70 000 acres with the others in the region creating a trans-frontier park, and with your support maybe just maybe we may be able to recreate the springbok migration, now that is Powerful..!!!! Samara has the Only Tracker academy in South Africa, a master Tracker is a person who has the skill of the Bushmen and there are only 2 Master Trackers left in South Africa today, one is on Royal Malewane and the other now with Samara, Fully Sponsored by Samara we now have a Tracker academy on our land, where we take in 16 under privileged guys or girls a year and we have the master Tracker train these folk to become trackers and eventually Master Trackers, they live and stay on Samara and walk the reserve daily learning about this very special land, now guests can also get involved and experience this unique trade, and more important each of these 16 people are guaranteed Jobs through South Africa after their training is Complete, now we can’t Bring back the Bushmen, but what we are doing is bringing back the skills and trade of the Bushmen... WOW..!!! Carbon sequestration programme, I bet this is something you never even knew existed, Research indicates that pristine thicket areas within South Africa hold more carbon compared to transformed or over-grazed land. Further to this, there are specific plant species that have particularly effective levels of absorption under semi arid conditions (or sequestration as it is known scientifically). One of the most effective plants is the Spekboom, Portulacaria Afra, which grows predominantly in the Eastern Cape. Samara Private Game Reserve is rich in spekboom habitat and has launched a project to facilitate the re-generation of previously over-grazed land on the reserve through the planting of Spekboom. Sequestration rates in restored spekboom habitats can reach between 1 to 4 tons per hectare per year, depending on rainfall. Samara has an excess of 10 000 ha identified for initial rehabilitation. In this special area that is Samara, there are Bushmen cave paintings and more important of Cheetah, this is very rare for Bushmen to paint Cheetah, so we now know that Cheetah used to roam these areas, and Samara were the ones to re-introduce Cheetah into this area, when we introduced the first one a little over 5 years back, it was the first recorded Cheetah in this area for over 120 years, This particular Cheetah ‘Sibella” was a captured girl in the Northern Provence by farmers and tortured and nearly killed, Samara rescued her, she was operated on and since her introduction to Samara and after the gift we gave her of 2 Males, she has now had a total of 18 cubs, some still on the reserve and some have been distributed around RSA where her Gene pool is spreading, Conservationists say she is now responsible for over 2% of all the Cheetah left in South Africa today, Samara’s 70 000 acres is ideal for Cheetah and we have 10 roaming the plains and mountains (this is the correct number for this size land), She is collared so guests are able to track her and even on foot you can get up to 5m to look her in the eyes and connect with this very special cat. Cheetah is Samara’s speciality. Samara offers a thinking Safari, very unique and different, other than the usual game viewing, we take you on a journey where you can view and see evidence dating back 900 million years , then more recent times to the pre dinosaur age where we have Fossil sights on the reserve, then more recent we can show you evidence of the 1st and 2nd Ice age and then right back to modern day where you will witness and experience and feel the natural and powerful healing energy of nature, this is very powerful and a highlight of every visitor. Many Guests and agents compare us to the Masai Mara and East Africa, but Samara is right here in RSA, we have these great open plains and these amphitheatre of mountains that are 1 200m above sea level and you can in one game and nature drive experience both, sitting on the edge of the world viewing this historical land below, Samara not only offers the conventional Safari and bush experience but samara offers the best Life experience you will find in Africa.....
