Halkett Country House

Halkett Country House, a secluded private retreat set in the heart of the Waterberg, in the Limpopo Province, South Africa. Offering a rare opportunity to see quintessential South African living at best, Halkett Country House is equally well suited to being the mainstay of any vacation or a restful element of an otherwise frantic trip. In the relatively unknown region of the Waterberg, we are located off the beaten track and all within 3 hours drive of the Johannesburg International Airport. Our location is just 20 minutes by car to a large game reserve and we often arrange day drives enabling our g guests to see the Big 5 and other wildlife on fully guided trips. We accommodate small groups on an exclusive bookings basis only and are perfect for families and friends travelling together in the region.

Appealing to a discerning guest, we have recently been credited with acceptance into the 2009 editions of South Africa's Portfolio Guide (Retreats Collection) and entry in the independently critiqued and published UK Greenwood Guide. Providing guests with a colonial-style, home from home experience in an original 100 year old homestead, this is an opportunity for visitors to experience authentic South African hospitality.

Fully-catered and with a courteous and friendly service, we cater for our visitors as best suits their needs. In only taking single-party bookings, you have the privacy to be yourselves and making noise is no concern! A swimming pool, bushveld tennis court, horse riding and hiking through nearly 400 hectares of natural surrounds provide activities within an otherwise serene atmosphere. There are lawns for children to play upon freely and no dangerous game makes this a very safe environment for walking, running and hiking.

The house itself exudes an air of days gone by, from the whitewashed exteriors to the distressed interior walls. As many guests have commented "it's like... coming home". Ideal for any person who wishes to slow down and escape from the stresses of modern living, serenity surrounds Halkett Country House.

Personal service is bestowed to provide everyone a special treat, be it a long relaxing soak in your ball and claw tub or dining under the stars to draw you back to nature. Exclusively booked, this is the perfect getaway where you can be yourself.

The house is open to whomever occupies the house as a whole. Please note that DSTV/TV is available in a lounge for all in the house, there is a full coffee/tea station on the verandah and a main safe is available on site - but not within the rooms themselves. Sherry decanters and water jugs are within the bedrooms. The beds are dressed in 100% percale white cotton linen with tasteful mosquito drapes and furnishings include antique wardrobes including oak and mahogany. Three of our 4 bedrooms can be converted into twin rooms. Our views are "farm views" looking onto the stables, lawns and bush beyond. This is a one hundred year old homestead and has been renovated minimally so as to not interfere with the original structure. Surrounding area is bushveld; we are situated on nearly 400 hectares. The ambience is what differentiates us from other places.

Breakfast is dependent on what our visitors would like. We offer a variety of cereals, hot breakfast including full- English, omelettes or pancakes, fruit and yoghurt, home-made bread and continental menus as desired, completed with fruit juice and hot beverages. Meals are healthy and home-cooked.

We aim to add a certain grace to our meals and are happy to cater to a number of needs, from unfussy child-friendly favourites to finer dining. We prefer to utilise locally sourced ingredients, including homegrown vegetables as far as we can do so. Meal times and portions are dictated by our guests. Larger groups may enjoy buffet style or self-service menus; we also plate food for candlelit dining, indoors or alfresco.
